Burleson City Council Recap from June 3rd, 2024
The Burleson City Council gathered on June 3rd, 2024, for a primarily procedural meeting that included some lively discussions about council policies and potential changes. Mayor Chris Fletcher kicked off the meeting at 5:36 pm, and the agenda covered 6 consent items, 4 development applications, and 2 reports from city staff.
Consent Agenda Items
The council unanimously approved all consent agenda items, which are routine matters voted on in a single motion:
Minutes from the May 20th, 2024, council meeting
New fees for right-of-way use applications in Old Town and adjustments to golf cart rental fees
Amendments to the roadway impact fee ordinance
Continued agreement between Burleson PD and Joshua ISD PD
Quarterly Investment Report as of March 31, 2024
Appointment of a presiding municipal county judge for the Burleson Municipal Court of Record for two years
Development Applications
Sprouts Development
The council approved a zoning change to General Retail for the new Sprouts location, simplifying zoning requirements. Tony McIlwain, Development Services Director, presented this.
The council also approved a sign variance for Sprouts, allowing two signs at 30ft in height, totaling 540 square feet, despite exceeding city code limits.
Shannon Creek Development
The council considered a request to change “The Cottages at Candler Drive” from one-story duplexes to one-story townhomes. Due to a lack of renderings, the discussion was postponed to the next meeting. Tony McIlwain presented this request and agreed with the council's decision.
ARCO Warehouse
The council approved a variance for ARCO to build a ~79,000 square foot warehouse off Forgotten Lane. The variance was necessary because bay doors faced Interstate 35, but it was granted as the warehouse sits far back from the interstate.
Reports and Presentations
City Secretary Amanda Campos discussed city council policies to inform new council members and staff, and to consider potential changes for greater transparency. Suggestions included documenting day-to-day expenditures like pothole repairs in the public record and clarifying the rules for executive sessions.
The council also reviewed policy #42 regarding the formation of a new Legislative Council Committee and current appointments. No changes were made to existing appointments, but a dedicated work session with citizen involvement was proposed to discuss legislative matters affecting Burleson.
Upcoming Meetings
The next city council meeting is expected to be held on June 17th, 2024.
Closing
The mayor closed the meeting at 7:24 pm after recess into executive session. For more details, including materials, presentations, and memos in the official record, you can view the official minutes here.
