Sherry Scott is a wonderful example of someone who deeply values community involvement and traditions, and who loves the city of Burleson. Having lived in Burleson for a significant portion of her life, graduated from Burleson High School, and now dedicating her days to various volunteering activities, her life is a testament to the power of community spirit and dedication. I asked her several questions about what she likes most about Burleson, what her daily life looks like, and she shared some wisdom for both newcomers and the younger generations of Burleson.
Sherry’s daily routine has evolved significantly over the years. Having worked for the County Clerk’s office, she now dedicates her time to volunteer work. Alongside her husband Larry, Sherry has spent over five years volunteering with CASA of Johnson County, an organization that supports children in foster care. Additionally, the couple maintains the blessing boxes around the city, providing essential items to those in need. Sherry also manages the blessing box page and serves as the vice chair for the Parks Board for the City of Burleson.
Despite her busy schedule, Sherry finds time to enjoy personal hobbies. She and Larry often go camping in their RV, and Sherry has a passion for kayak fishing. These activities provide her with a perfect balance between community service and personal relaxation. While she enjoys these moments of relaxation, you may be surprised to learn that Sherry is actually a certified scuba diver! Among her various diving adventures, one of her first and most memorable dives was at the Blue Hole in Belize. Sherry truly has an adventurous spirit and a genuine love for exploring new places and having new experiences!
Sherry’s connection to Burleson runs deep. She moved to the city in the fourth grade and graduated from Burleson High School. After marrying, she moved away for a time but returned in 2009, drawn back by the strong sense of community and the presence of her family. Burleson’s friendly atmosphere and close-knit community are among the aspects she loves most about living here. Additionally, she cherishes the local traditions and events that Burleson hosts each year. The Christmas parade, tree lighting, and drone show are some of her absolute favorite events to attend. The city does a fantastic job showcasing the festive spirit in both traditional and modern ways. Sherry also volunteers at the Santa Breakfast at Russell Farm, an event that brings joy to everyone, kids and adults alike, during the holiday season.
Since returning to Burleson in 2009, Sherry has witnessed significant changes in the city. One of the most appreciated developments is the increased ability to shop and dine locally, eliminating the need to drive to Fort Worth. This convenience has enhanced the quality of life for residents and supports the local economy. As for her favorite places in Burleson, she mentions both Bailey Lake and Oak Valley Park, finding them peaceful retreats within the city. She often enjoys walking the trail at Oak Valley Park. Both of these places offer a perfect blend of nature and community, providing spaces for both relaxation and recreation. If you haven't been, they are definitely worth a visit.
Sherry is deeply involved in the community, not only as a volunteer but also as a member of the Park Board. Additionally, she proudly supports her husband, who is a city council member (Place 4). Her involvement in various activities and groups demonstrates her commitment to making Burleson a better place for all its residents. Reflecting on her time in Burleson, Sherry has many cherished memories. High school bonfires, Friday night football games, working at Winn Dixie as a teenager, and watching the fireworks show from her parents’ driveway on the Fourth of July are among her favorites. She also fondly remembers cruising down Johnson Street to meet friends at Warren Park, a popular gathering spot.
Sherry’s advice to newcomers to Burleson is simple yet profound: get involved, meet your neighbors, volunteer, vote, and attend city council meetings. Becoming active in community events and organizations is a great way to meet people and make a positive impact. Sherry believes that community involvement is key to feeling connected and making a difference in Burleson. To the younger people living in Burleson, Sherry offers this additional piece of advice: slow down. She emphasizes the importance of being present in the moment and enjoying the experiences and connections around you. Sherry encourages young people to put down their cell phones and stop focusing on capturing the perfect photo, instead savoring the real-life experiences and relationships that matter most.
I asked Sherry about what she would like to see in the future for Burleson, and she expressed a strong desire for a new Senior Citizen Center. Such a center would not only provide valuable resources and social opportunities for the city’s older residents but also enhance their quality of life and foster a deeper sense of community.
For fun, we asked Sherry who the most famous person she’s ever met was. She recounted a story about meeting the one and only Chuck Norris and his wife on a flight back from Los Angeles. Despite Chuck’s bravado, she said they were an extremely kind couple. Chuck’s wife even sent Sherry a letter later on, which she has treasured as a keepsake ever since.
I had the opportunity to meet and get to know both Sherry and her husband Larry during the 2024 City Council Election, in which I was a candidate. As a first-time candidate, I was unfamiliar with many nuances of the election, the city, and its citizens. The hospitality Sherry showed me during those incredibly busy eight weeks was extremely helpful and immediately revealed the type of person she is. Sherry is deeply involved and caring, with a genuine love for the city of Burleson and all its residents. Her passion for seeing everyone succeed and thrive is evident every time you speak with her.
Sherry’s story and experiences beautifully reflect the life that everyone can enjoy in Burleson. With her continued involvement in the community and dedication to volunteering, she has proven to be a fantastic role model for anyone in the city. As Burleson continues to grow and evolve, having more residents like Sherry will undoubtedly play a vital role in shaping its future, ensuring it remains a vibrant and welcoming place for all. Burleson is a fantastic place to live, and Sherry is part of the reason why.
